Domain Scout is a handy little tool for checking on the availability of domain names. Don’t let the fact it only displays four buttons fool you; I searched for domains at several TLDs and it worked for all of them.
If a domain is taken, you can view the whois info and even take a look at the site. If the domain is available it lets you “verify whois record”. I can only assume that during testing the developer was not 100% comfortable with his results and added in this double check.
Unfortunately, there is no option to purchase available names.
